This question flashed through my mind while contemplating the consistent failure of man towards achieving unity, especially in a diverse country like Nigeria. “UNITY” is a common word sang and preached in every divided society. The word is common in National Anthems, constitutions, mottos, badges, etc. So while thinking about the factors that cause division among men, I realized many were merely created by man, but: what about Languages and Races?

I decided to make some research, it was interesting and so I feel I should share it with those having similar questions in mind. Below is what I got:

From the biblical aspect (Genesis 11:1), Moses writes, “Now the whole earth had one language and few words”. After the flood, the whole earth spoke the same language. But man’s habitual sin brought about the language barrier.

In 11:2, we read these fateful words,”And as men migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there”. The word “east” is intentionally alluded to in the scriptures to let us know that a person is moving contrary to God’s will. In Genesis 9:1, God clearly commanded Noah and his sons to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth (check Gen. 8:17). God wanted them to move throughout all the earth and multiply but they banded themselves together in order to defy God’s command. They selected the best land that they could find; they stacked their claim in the land of shinar, a place that becomes associated with evil.

In Genesis 11:4, they said,”Come let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth”. The motivation for building this city and tower was to make a name for themselves according to their own will. Now God desired unity for humankind, but one that he created, not one founded on man’s principles. The words in Genesis makes what might be called the first public declaration of “humanism”. This verse reveals three (3) problems:

{To Be Continued}

“However good, however rich national and cultural diversity can be, it should never be allowed to cloud the more fundamental fact that all human people share the same nature, breathe the same air, live on the same earth, and owe their life to the same God.”

Have A Beautiful Day!!
